Mail Art Challenge Dec. 2015: "White Rhino"

Our recent video when we opened art for "Paradise" was such great fun and a success that we decided to host it with a different theme monthly. Here's how it works...

Ugly Art Room will announce the theme on the 1st of each month. Artwork is sent by participating artists and arrives no later than the 25th of that month. Depending on the number of submissions, at least five pieces will be selected and opened on camera. A video will be posted by the last day of that month and the following month's mail art challenge theme will be announced. All original work in any medium can be submitted as long as the work can fit into an 8 1/2 x 12" bubble mailer. Work MUST be sent with a SASE so the artwork can be returned. Work will be on display during Corvallis Arts Walk which takes place the third Thursday of each month. Work will be made available for sale on Ugly Art Room's website until the CAW event.

With only 3 White Rhinos left on the planet and the species’ extinction imminent, Ugly Art Room’s mail art challenge for December asks artists to explore themes of abundance and loss. A nod to the holiday gift giving/stealing game, the term “White Elephant” refers to an extravagant but burdensome gift which cannot be easily disposed of, based on the legend of the King of Siam gifting rare albino elephants to courtiers who had displeased him, that they might be ruined by the animals' upkeep costs (Wiki) With mass consumerism threatening the “true meaning,” as they say, of the holidays, we often find ourselves with so much (spending, food, gifts, stress, drink, debt, etc) but at what cost? The flip side of giving is taking. The white rhino was poached, it’s horn taken, and as its numbers declined, efforts to “save the rhino” failed. What is left to save? Is it too late? What is your "white rhino"?
