"TRIP," an Art Piece in an elevator by David B. Smith

Ugly Art Room is proud to present "TRIP" an art piece in an elevator by David B. Smith at 67 West St in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on April 13, 2014 from 1-7pm, with an opening reception from 4-6pm.

RSVP

Trip is a site-specific art installation in an elevator at 67 West Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Elevator passengers occupy a defined box, yet float through a column from one fixed point to another. Trip engages with the relationship between time, space, and movement to explore cognitive gaps and perceptual slippage. A series of blankets line the inside of the space, their pattern derived from a security gate -- a perforated wall that allows light, air and sound to pass, while enforcing a boundary between two spaces. Microphones on the floor run through a delay pedal amplifying and echoing the elevator riders' footsteps.

About the artist:

David B. Smith, who lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, makes images and sculptural installations to explore fantasy, memory, loss, and commodity in American culture. He has developed a systematic yet intuitive approach to selecting and processing cultural artifacts into playful arrangements. Using this pseudo programming-code, he gains access to the back-end of cultural memory. In his immersive works, he reveals, reprograms and re-generates forms that occupy the space between remembering, forgetting, and imagining and that vacillate between the real and the virtual.
Since receiving an MFA from Bard College in 2007, Smith has curated 15 shows and showed in 45 art spaces such as Exit Art, David Zwirner Gallery, PS1, and NADA Miami. He has been awarded residencies at The Waterpod, Harold Arts, and BOFFO, and his work has been discussed in the New York Times, Washington Post, and Miami New Times among others. His music project, Doom Trumpet, has performed in places like Invisible Dog, The Knitting Factory, and the International Center of Photography.
